First Aid, April 16th
Our first aid course started on Monday the 16th of April, it was only three days long but we learnt so much.
We were slit up into our form classes for the course.
The first day was mainly just theory and we learned a lot of acronyms to remember different first aid procedures. We also learned how to make two different type of slings, one for a dislocated shoulder and one for an injury below the shoulder that needed elevation, we practiced them multiple times until we could do it perfectly.
On the second day we did a recap of everything we had learned the day before, we were told to all wear our tracksuits as we would be doing the practical part of the course. We watched videos of people giving CPR and instructional videos on what to do if you are ever in a situation that someone needs assistance. We were taught how to give CPR and we learned what to do if someone was choking and how to give the hemlock manoeuvre. We also learned how to put somebody into the recovery position and what to do if someone has asthma or is short of breath. I personally found the second day the most interesting of the three as I felt i learnt the most I could about how to save someone.
On the third day we recapped again, and learnt a bit more about first aid, but we finally got to finish the course by doing our test. We all thought the test was going to be a lot harder than it was, but because we were all interested in what we learned and really listened, my whole class passed.
I didn’t realise before doing this course how important it really was and I’m so happy that this was apart of my TY course as I now feel I can help someone in need of first aid.

Boxing
On November 20th I started the boxing course. It is a six week long program run by Neil Bowman from blackrock boxing club. Throughout the course we learned all the different types of punches that are thrown in boxing. We learned about all the different combo punches as well. We did all of this while working on our fitness levels with a mixture of runs, sprints, and abb workouts. This was a great experience that definitely helped my fitness .
Scuba Diving, November 27th
On the 27th of November a group of fourth got the on the bus at 10:45 and headed to the national aquatic centre. We had been given a talk on the scuba theory on the 22nd of November to make sure we were aware of everything we were meant to do. When we arrived off the bus at the national aquatic centre, we were split into two groups. I was put into the second group, we were guided towards the stands while the other group went and got changed. When we were in the stands we watch the group below gather all the equipment and get ready to head into the water. As they emerged underwater we could barely see them. After a while, it was our turn to scuba dive. We headed to the changing rooms and got changed. After that , we headed out to the pools, we started off by putting our wetsuits on. We then grabbed our flippers and masks and sat by the pool. We were given our bags and tanks and waited till the instructor told us to get into the water. We then carefully began to go underwater. While we were under, we swam through hoops, did flips and handstands and played a game of catch.
Overall, it was a really fun day and a great experience. I would definitely be interested in going scuba diving again and would recommend it to anyone
Public access to law, November 10th
Public access to law took place on the 10th of November, this was one of the activity that we were given the choice of doing. We started the day by going over to the pavilion and introducing ourselves to.Who was going to teach us about law.
She began to talk to us about law, asking what we thought law was all about and different cases she had worked on. She then got us to watch a CSI programme where detectives find clues from even the most well thought out criminal acts. We then got to see how a court case operates by taking part in a case. People were given different roles such as ambassador, victim and suspect , everybody else was given the role of the jury. The ambassadors cross examined the witnesses and then made their final summary of their cases and the jury had to make a decision on whether the suspect was guilty or not guilty.
I enjoyed taking part in this and it give me a more opened mind to what doing law would be like for the future.

Tag Rugby, October 26th
We had been doing a tag rugby module for P.E for a few weeks and on the 26th of October, a selected group of 4th years went to DCU to take part in a tag rugby tournament. We were split up into mixed teams with Blackrock and Loreto Dalkey.
Each team was given a different name of a country and played on four different pitches. My team name was Australia and we ended up coming 5th out of 10 teams
Overall I really enjoyed playing tag rugby and getting to know everyone from the different schools

Martial Arts, October 23rd - 24th
On Monday the 23rd of October , the whole of 4th took part in a two day martial arts programme. The course was taught by Daragh, our instructor. For the first two hours on Monday, we were given an introduction in the halla nua. We were told what martial arts is about, what situation we would need to defend ourselves in and how to look out for an attacker. We were also shown videos of real life fights, so we would know what to expect when faced with the situation. Afterwards we went down to the sports hall. We were put into lines and each line was given a pad. Daragh then demonstrated different hits and blocks to use such as, palm, elbow, knee and kick.
after we had practiced these a few times and put them altogether, we were then taught how to intercept a hit and bring your attacker to the ground. We also had to attempt to get away from the attacker from lying on the ground.
On Tuesday , we started straight away in the sports hall. We began by running through the 10 tips of self defence and then went into practicing what we had learned yesterday. Then we went on to learning punches and kicks. We were also taught how to defend ourselves if our attacker has a bat or knife or even if we are up against two attackers. We finished up the programme by doing an assignment test. In the test we were put into separate groups and had to complete a set of actions. We were exhausted by the end of it but we were happy we had all successfully passed the assignment.
Overall, I thought this was a great experience and I am very happy I was able to take the chance to do it. Hopefully we are all more prepared if we are ever unfortunately met with an attacker . I look forward to seeing Daragh later on in the year for our third day of martial arts.
